‍ ‍USAHello Classroom 2026

Scaling a mobile-first learning platform

USAHello is a nonprofit that helps more than 3.5 million immigrants each year find trusted, multilingual information through their suite of digital tools. One of those tools is USAHello Classroom, a mobile-first learning platform that offers free, self-paced classes. I led the redesign of the Classroom beta in early 2024 (case study), and was delighted to come back to drive design for the product’s expansion and brand refresh in 2026.

As the sole product designer I defined every aspect of the learner experience - from class discovery and onboarding, through in- and post- class flows. Especially exciting was the opportunity to do a light brand refresh and refine the design system I created back in 2024.

Challenge

The original Classroom had a very simple structure that focused on easy sign up and return engagement with USAHello’s long-form classes on GED and US citizenship exam preparation, their sole offerings at the time. In 2026, USAHello began to develop short-form classes on topics like digital safety, civic skills and more in order to support broader audience of learners.  The Classroom’s architecture required rethinking to scale easily with USAHello’s growing class catalog, while the shift in target audiences also opened up new possibilities in how learners might access and discover class content.

Solution

We created an inviting and intuitive platform that balances public access with member-only spaces, making it easy for a range of audiences to engage with PIF Coalition’s impactful work.

Here are a few highlights from the new experience:

Impact

Due to some unanticipated challenges working with PIF’s current CRM, the full website experience was just launched in mid-January 2026. However, the new site is now set up to gather baseline metrics on website usage (including engagement with resources, working groups, and member-only spaces) which will inform future direction of the organization and website.

Learnings

One of the most exciting features we designed - a searchable, login-protected member directory - was ultimately blocked by limitations in PIF’s CRM, EveryAction. Though both PIF and our developer worked to get confirmation on the feasibility of the designs early during technical discovery, challenges communicating with the CRM’s customer support team meant the discovery phase dragged on for many months until we finally had to cut the feature.

While the directory did not ship, it was fully designed and validated with users, and PIF plans to revisit it when they migrate to a more flexible CRM, anticipated in late 2026.

During our discovery interviews, we found that connecting with other members working in similar locations and spaces was of huge value to coalition members. A searchable and filterable directory would allow members to easily discover and reach out to fellow members without PIF staff support.
